What is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift or forehead lift is a procedure that restores a more youthful, refreshed look to the area above the eyes. The procedure corrects drooping brows and improves the horizontal lines and furrows that can make a person appear angry, sad or tired.

A forehead lift is most commonly performed to minimize the visible effects of ageing. It can help to:

  • Correct a low, heavy or droopy brow achieving a more alert and refreshed look.
  • Correct furrows and frown lines which have developed around the brow and eye.
  • Achieve a better overall result from facial surgery e.g. when used in conjunction with a Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) - where addressing ageing of the eyelids alone does not yield the best results, or in conjunction with a facelift to rejuvenate the face.

Most patients are pleased with the results of a forehead lift, no matter which surgical method was used. Often, patients don't realise how much their sagging forehead contributed to the signs of aging until they see how much younger and more rested they appear after the lift.

Although a forehead lift does not stop the clock, it can minimize the appearance of aging for years.

Best candidate for a Brow Lift

Your surgeon will help you determine your suitability for the procedure and also decide on which surgical approach will best achieve your cosmetic goals: the classical method (involving an incision behind the hairline) or the endoscopic brow lift.

Often, patients who believe they need upper-eyelid surgery find that a brow lift better meets their surgical goals.

Patients who are bald, who have a receding hairline, or who have had previous upper-eyelid surgery are very often still excellent candidates for forehead lift.

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and requires a overnight stay.

Possible complications of Brow Lift

All surgery carries some uncertainty and risk. Complications are rare and usually minor when a forehead lift is performed by an experienced cosmetic surgeon. Yet, the possibility of complications must be considered.

  • Numbness of the forehead, just beyond the incision line can occur. It is usually temporary, but on rare occasions, may be permanent in some patients.
  • Asymmetry of the brows may occur which may be due to post-operative swelling or premature dissolving of the sutures involved in the surgery. This is usually amenable to correction by the surgeon.
  • In rare cases, the nerves that control eyebrow movement may be injured on one or both sides, resulting in a loss of ability to raise the eyebrows or wrinkle the forehead. Additional surgery may be required to correct the problem.
  • Infection and bleeding are very rare, but are possibilities.
